Sending my condolences to all Dons family for your great loss. He will be greatly missed by all his friends throughout nature conservation groups in Sligo and further afield. His wealth of knowledge and readiness to share it with others was always greatly appreciated and we will miss him dearly as a wonderful mentor and friend. Ar dheis Dé go raibh an hanam dílis. So sorry to hear of Don's passing. He could never do enough for us when we were in the area doing IWDG work . We will forever be inspired and indebted to him and not a Whale or dolphin will be recorded in Sligo or Leitrim without it reminding us of Don's contribution. Padraig Whooley, west Cork

Sincere sympathies to the Cotton family on the passing of Don. I am a former student of Sligo IT. Don opened our eyes to the amazing world of invertebrates that live under the rocks of our rivers and lakes. He was inspiring. May he RIP.

I fondly remember Sunday afternoon Birdspotting visits to various habitats around County Sligo in the 1980s, when I was new to the area. Don Cotton always had time to explain things in simple language to children & adults alike on such outings. My sympathies to his family & close friends.
