Frequently Asked Questions

The questions families ask most often, covering everything from cost to advance planning. If your query is not listed please contact us directly.

Use these responses as a starting point. Your director will provide personal guidance during planning and remains available by phone 24/7.

Who should I contact after a death has occurred?

Contact the funeral director who will coordinate arrangements with the church, cemetery and other partners. Have the deceased's name, address, your relationship and details of where and when the death occurred ready so we can guide you immediately.

Should I contact the funeral director in advance of an expected death?

Yes. Reaching out early lets us answer questions, explain paperwork and prepare arrangements so the family has fewer tasks when the time comes.

Can a funeral be held over for a few days?

Yes. With modern embalming techniques there is no difficulty delaying the funeral for a number of days when travel or family needs require it.

What is embalming?

Embalming preserves the body by injecting specialist fluids into the vascular system.

What is a post mortem or autopsy?

A post mortem confirms the cause of death when the deceased was not under a doctor's care or when clarification is required by authorities.

Can I make advance arrangements for my own funeral?

Yes. Phone our office, visit the funeral home or request a home visit to record your wishes in advance, easing the burden on family.

Can I pay for my funeral in advance?

Yes. We provide facilities to prepay funeral and undertaker expenses so finances are settled ahead of time.

Can I purchase a grave plot in advance?

Most cemeteries in Sligo and the wider North West do not allow pre-purchasing of grave plots.

How much does a funeral cost?

We provide a detailed estimate once we receive your personal requests. Call 071 915 9999 or Seán Feehily on 087 241 1114 for guidance.

Is cremation cheaper than burial?

There is little difference between the two options.

Is the coffin cremated?

Yes. Nothing is removed prior to cremation; the entire coffin and its contents are cremated respectfully.

What grants are available?

In exceptional circumstances a payment up to €2,000 may be available through the Community Welfare Officer, and €6,000 may be provided following the death of a parent of a dependent child.
