Wonderful memories as a teenage friend of John growing up in Carrick. We rowed together as a winning schoolboys crew which included his twin brother, Oliver and we all enjoyed an idyllic teenage boyhood in Carrick. Our sincere sympathies to all Johns family and friends. Ar dheis dè go raibh a anam dilís.

Dear Joan, I am very saddened to learn of John's death. He was a wonderful character and I remember him fondly from our time together in Finner and the Middle East. His passing will undoubtedly leave a huge void in you and your family's lifes, but I know you will have many fond memories to sustain you in your sorrow. I regret I am unable to travel to his funeral, as I am currently abroad from Ireland. I will contact you on my return to commiserate personally with you. Yours sincerely Eamonn

Sincere condolences to Joan,Sharon,Colin,Ornagh,James Extended Burke and Masterson families on the sad passing of John. I am truly indebted to John for the brave action he took that day in Sept 1964. I was one of the 3 boys rescued from drowning that day,I was unconscious when taken from river John immediately started artificial respiration on me until the local doctor arrived. The doctor informed me afterwards Were not for the quick intervention of John I would be gone by the time he arrived. It was a proud day for me when John received his National Bravery award in 2023. I know every time you see this award it will bring great pride and joy to you all. Rest in eternal peace John. You will forever be in my thoughts and prayers. Michael
